PART 1 — The Sacred Landscape of Cape Town, South Africa
15th to 25th October 2007

The initial seed for this unique event was sown back in 2004, when Jean Evans was reading “Daughter of Gaia”, while leaning against a typical granite boulder below the third of the Twelve Apostles and looking out over Camps Bay beach. From this vantage, the panorama of a very blue-green Atlantic Ocean stretches westwards into the distance before one.

Inspired by the book’s depiction of the spiritual nature of the Earth, the thought arose that it would be a wonderful thing for the author, Marko Pogacnik, to visit this tip of Africa — surely a vital spot on the globe. The idea was followed up over a few advantageous meetings and three years later, Marko arrived at Cape Town airport, bringing with him his sculpturing tools for the creation of a lithopuncture sculpture. He had agreed to lead a group (yet to be gathered together) into a consciousness of the spiritual nature of the landscape and some of the vital dynamics of  the elemental sphere. He would also carve a cosmogram especially designed to assist a local farm, which is endeavouring to convert a substantial acreage of what has become infertile land, to biodynamic practices, so that it might be re-enlivened and also bring new life to the surrounding area.

This is a record of the adventure which began the day of Marko’s arrival on the 15th October and ended with his departure on the 25th October, 2007.

The first day Marko arrived directly from working in Athens where he had given public talks on the Greek goddess Athene. Goddess of wisdom and courage, Athene is also associated with owls, as symbols of the night consciousness—or those who can see into the realms which lie hidden from so-called “normal” everyday consciousness.

So perhaps it was not as amazing as it seemed when, on our first walk around the host’s farm in Stellenbosch, we were visited by an owl which stationed itself in full visibility in front of Marko and stayed quietly on its perch in a leafless tree while Marko established a mysterious communication with it.

Afterwards, Marko confided with us that he had received confirmation of his own intuition that the area which we were inspecting was once a sacred site of considerable importance, and, although, it was now deeply asleep, he felt that the spirit of the landscape could be awakened once again by a new human consciousness: a consciousness that can arise out of the desire to cooperate once more new human consciousness: a consciousness that can arise out of the desire to cooperate once more with the forces of Gaia. The symbol of the owl seemed to follow us on our journey over the next ten days. One can see that it is a central image in the cosmogram which Marko created for the future of the ideals being nurtured for the surrounding land.

The stone is to be erected in the courtyard of the main house on the property to help in the wise cooperation between human beings and elemental beings on the land.

A few days after Marko had departed, an owl was seen to perch on top of the cosmogram! Apparently it now pays regular visits to this spot.

Before leaving Cape Town, Jean snapped this baby owl, proudly displayed by the mother in the fork of a tree which actually faces the “altar” rock,
or “owl’s head rock at Kirstenbosch. (taken on 26th October.)

Lithopuncture: (or geopuncture), is a kind of acupuncture for the land. Placing stones on energy points in the landscape can act like acupuncture needles on the meridian system of the human body. When these stones are engraved with an appropriate cosmogram, it can intensify the process of freeing and clearing energy, bringing positive change and healing or clearing blockages.)

Below are pictures of the main cosmogram, which was firmly embedded in a central spot on the farm, close to the place where Marko had spent two days sculpting beneath two wild olive trees.  He added a smaller cosmogram on the side which will help the ailing olive trees. The cosmogram is a message to the elemental beings to help in the re-enlivening of the land—and to help human efforts aimed at becoming more conscious of the spiritual/physical nature of our Earth environment.

By concreting the stone into the ground, at a carefully chosen place, it acts as a lithopuncture “needle”. The lithopuncture stone will be a constant reminder of the invisible dimension which brings reward in response to an awareness of its essential role.

The “planting” of the lithopuncture sculpture was enthusiastically celebrated by a group, including owners, workers and well-wishers, who support the consciously adopted ideal
for the farm. The accomplishment of the ideals rests upon the investment of
willing hearts and hands, in devoted labour.
